Kyoto's temples, shrines, and historic streets offer countless opportunities to experience the beauty of Japanese culture and tradition. Yet some of the most memorable experiences come not only from observing these traditions, but from taking part in them yourself.
For guests seeking a deeper cultural experience, we would like to introduce a workshop dedicated to shibori, a traditional Japanese tie-dyeing technique. By folding, twisting, stitching, or binding fabric before dyeing it, shibori creates beautiful and distinctive patterns, making each piece truly one of a kind.
The workshop is held at ANDO Kyoto Main Store, and we recently had the opportunity to visit the shop and try this unique experience ourselves.
ANDO began as a manufacturer of tie-dyed fabrics before expanding into kimono accessories. Today, the company also creates a variety of products for everyday use. Through its workshops, visitors can easily enjoy an introduction to traditional Japanese craftsmanship. A range of courses is available, allowing participants to choose the item they would like to decorate using the shibori technique.
During our visit, we participated in the tote bag and T-shirt courses. Please check our Instagram for photos and videos of the experience, including the shop itself and the steps we followed to create our original designs.
The workshop fee and duration vary depending on the item you choose. The tote bag course and the T-shirt course each cost 5,500 yen (tax included) and take approximately 90 minutes to complete.
For further information about the shop, the workshops, and the available courses, please visit their website.
If you are staying with us, we encourage you to take this opportunity to enjoy a unique cultural experience and create your own one-of-a-kind souvenir from Kyoto.
