On August 16, 2026, Kyoto will host "Gozan Okuribi", one of the city's most cherished summer traditions.
Held at the end of the Obon season, this ceremony features giant bonfires lit on five mountains surrounding Kyoto. The fires form traditional characters and shapes, creating a memorable sight across the city's night skyline.

The first bonfire, known as "Daimonji," is lit at approximately 8:00 PM, followed by the remaining mountains in sequence. Many locations throughout Kyoto offer excellent views of the mountains, including areas along the Kamo River and several spots in northern Kyoto. We encourage you to arrive early, as popular viewing areas can become crowded.
